Dalton, GA – The Dalton Academy is thrilled to welcome Michel Bates as the new Tennis Program Director. A distinguished tennis player and coach, Bates has left an enduring impact on the sport through decades of excellence. A trailblazer in Dalton, Georgia, Bates made history in 1981 by becoming the only State Champion in Dalton High School Tennis history. That same year, she represented the United States in the Junior Davis Cup, solidifying her reputation as a rising star in the sport. Her high school achievements earned her a place as an inaugural inductee into the Dalton High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Following her high school success, Bates received a full tennis scholarship to Auburn University, where she continued to excel on the national stage. She earned All-American honors once and received All-American honorable mention twice. Additionally, she secured All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors three times, establishing herself as one of the top collegiate players in the nation.
Bates' coaching career spans over 30 years, during which she has dedicated herself to developing both youth and adult players. She previously served as the Head Coach of the Dalton State Tennis program for five years until the program was dissolved. For the past 18 years, she has been the Director of Tennis and Pickleball at Dalton Parks and Recreation, where her passion for instruction continues to inspire athletes of all skill levels.
Now, as she takes on the role of Tennis Program Director at The Dalton Academy, Bates brings her extensive experience and commitment to player development to the school’s tennis program. Her leadership will provide student-athletes with valuable skills, mentorship, and opportunities for growth both on and off the court.
Throughout her coaching tenure, Bates has mentored numerous athletes, many of whom have earned collegiate scholarships. Notably, one of her former players is currently ranked among the Top 50 in the world. Her dedication to coaching is unparalleled, and she has made a lasting impact on every player she has trained. Known for her commitment and genuine care, Bates is not only a skilled coach but also a devoted mentor who fosters personal and athletic growth in her players.
