Dalton, GA ā Dalton Public Schools is proud to announce that Antonella Colmenarez, an 8th grade student-athlete, has been named the first-ever recipient of the Lance Sotelo Award.
Presented by Chuy and Jeanne Sotelo, this award recognizes a Track and Field athlete who exemplifies outstanding work ethic, dedication to their team, and a strong determination to continue their journey in the sport. The award was established in memory of Dalton Public Schools alumnus Lance Sotelo and will continue to be presented to future student-athletes who embody these same qualities.
Lance Sotelo, a 2019 graduate and Catamount Cross Country alum, left a lasting legacy within Dalton Public Schools and beyond. Known for his energy, determination, and joyful spirit, Lance approached every practice and race with purpose and grit. Over four seasons, he inspired teammates and coaches through his quiet strength and unwavering commitment.
More than an exceptional athlete, Lance was a young man of strong character. He demonstrated kindness, respect, and genuine care for others, leaving a meaningful impact on his team and school community. Following his time at Dalton, Lance earned a scholarship to compete in cross country and track at Queens University of Charlotte, where he went on to earn both his bachelorās degree and MBA.
The award is also connected to Lanceās Legacy, a nonprofit organization established in his memory. Lanceās Legacy was created after Lance tragically passed away on January 14, 2026, when a speeding driver ran a red light, taking his life. The organizationās mission is to inspire and influence young athletes and their communities to pursue personal growth while embodying Lanceās core values of kindness, inclusivity, and authenticity.
Antonella Colmenarez was selected as the inaugural recipient for demonstrating the very traits that defined Lanceās life: commitment, perseverance, and a deep dedication to her team. Her recognition marks the beginning of a meaningful tradition that will continue to honor Lanceās legacy for years to come.
