Hammond Creek Middle School Podcasters Recognized by Georgia Public Broadcasting

Dalton, Ga. ā€” Dalton Public Schools is excited to celebrate our Hammond Creek Middle School podcasters who have been recognized and published by Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB).

Georgia Public Broadcasting is a state organization with nine public television stations that deliver quality content through PBS and locally produced programming.

Through the Student Voices Collective (SVC), teachers across the state have brought their students to engage with journalism and storytelling in a way they have not done before.

With the leadership of Broadcasting and Communications teacher, Jennifer Barmore, her students played a strong part in the SVC, which provided students the opportunity to analyze real world local issues and tackle the journalistic process to investigate them. They developed insightful questions and interviewed trusted sources, ultimately allowing them to provide coverage for a story important to them.

"I am so proud of the program I have been granted the opportunity to build at Hammond Creek, but what has the biggest impact and is really the biggest motivator for me is the students who want to do the extra work, come in early, or stay late to have their voice heard," Barmore said. "My job is to provide opportunities ā€” it is the students who choose to take the opportunities and run with them."

After publishing their story on a statewide platform, GPB invited not just educators, but students and their families to GPB studios for a celebration.

This was especially meaningful to Hammond Creek podcaster Tucker Rewis and his mother Megan Rewis. As Megan Rewis explains, ā€œI had the opportunity to attend the GPB student showcase with my son, Tucker. What an incredible experience! It was so fun to see where and how everything happens. The GPB Staff were all so pumped and uplifting to the students in attendance. This program is a huge opportunity for students. Iā€™m so thankful for Mrs. Barmoreā€™s willingness to work alongside GPB to give students a platform to be heard.ā€

Dalton Public Schools congratulates these talented students on their outstanding accomplishments and is excited to see what other stories they go on to tell.
