Dalton Public Schools Celebrates Black History Month: Spotlight on Yolonda Jefferson-Perry In honor of Black History Month, Dalton Public Schools is highlighting educators who inspire and uplift their students every day. Yolonda Jefferson-Perry, a 5th-grade literacy teacher at City Park School, is passionate about fostering a love for learning and creating opportunities for all students. In addition to teaching, she has worked with City Park’s Soccer Club for the past three years, helping students develop teamwork and confidence beyond the classroom. Jefferson-Perry’s journey is deeply rooted in the values of education and perseverance. “I was raised in a family that values and believes in education,” she shares. “There was no doubt that I would pursue higher education.” Her family’s commitment to learning spans generations, with many attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country. As a graduate of Albany State University, she found a strong sense of belonging. “For the first time, I had truly seen how diverse the Black culture was,” she recalls. For Jefferson-Perry, Black History Month is a time to honor the past while educating future generations. “It is a way to celebrate the accomplishments of our ancestors and their struggles to ensure that our lives would be different from theirs,” she explains. She celebrates by sharing her family’s history, researching Black historical contributions, and watching Black cinema. She hopes to inspire her students with the same message her parents instilled in her: “Never give up, stay focused, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve it.” As she reflects on this month, Jefferson-Perry leaves a powerful reminder: “With our future ahead of us and the ancestors beside us, THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN'T DO!”

Dalton Public Schools Celebrates Black History Month: Spotlight on Jonathan Adams In honor of Black History Month, Dalton Public Schools is highlighting the voices and experiences of dedicated staff members who make a lasting impact on students every day. Jonathan Adams, a teacher at Dalton High School and head coach of the boys' basketball team, uses his platform to foster unity and inspire the next generation. "Growing up as a Black male in the South has been challenging at times," Adams shared. "I have seen how race has divided this country and caused major issues. In my personal life, I have experienced tension due to my interracial marriage. But then I get to be around these young kids that I teach and coach every day, and it gives me tremendous hope for the future. I see Black kids, White kids, Hispanic kids, and many others working together and enjoying one another. I have chosen to use my platform as a Black teacher and coach to promote harmony and respect for our differences. But I am inspired every day by these kids!" For Adams, Black History Month is a time for reflection, appreciation, and education. "It’s a time to say thank you to all the individuals who struggled and, in some cases, gave their lives to promote racial equality. It’s also a time to spotlight individuals who may not be as well known as Martin Luther King Jr. but have made incredible contributions," he said. "For me, it’s about looking at how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. But it’s also a time to celebrate these young people who continue to erase the racial lines that have divided us for so long." Through his own educational journey, Adams has deepened his appreciation for Black history and culture. "It has introduced me to individuals who accomplished so much and are often forgotten. It has truly allowed me to see how strong they were to overcome adversity. It has allowed me to see the richness of my Black culture and its influence in our society," he reflected.
